Role Purpose
We are seeking a skilled, practical technician to manufacture and assemble high-quality cryogenic products, including transfer lines, LN₂ traps, vacuum-insulated components and associated assemblies.
This is a hands-on role with a strong emphasis on precision welding, soldering, brazing, and mechanical assembly. The successful candidate will produce neat, accurate and carefully to engineering drawings and defined quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble bespoke cryogenic systems from engineering drawings and build information.
- Fit pipework, valves, vacuum components, flanges and mechanical assemblies.
- Perform vacuum and helium leak testing of components and assemblies.
- Prepare, clean and handle components for high and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) applications.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout assembly and prevent contamination of vacuum-critical components.
- Complete mechanical fitting, drilling, tapping and general assembly work.
- Occasionally operate manual mills and lathes for simple machining and modification work.
- Follow route cards, drawings, Standard Work Instructions and manufacturing instructions.
- Complete and record required checks during assembly.
- Identify, investigate and resolve build problems, escalating issues where required.
- Carry out rework and modifications when required.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Previous mechanical assembly, engineering or manufacturing experience.
- Strong practical and mechanical skills.
- Ability to read and work from engineering drawings.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to identify practical solutions to build issues.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high standard of workmanship.
- Ability to work to strict cleanliness standards.
- Experience using hand tools and workshop equipment.
- Ability to follow documented processes and instructions.
Able to work independently and take responsibility for the quality of completed work.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience handling and assembling components for high vacuum or ultra-high vacuum (UHV) applications.
- Understanding of UHV cleanliness, contamination control and appropriate component handling..
- Vacuum and helium leak testing.
- Cryogenic or high-vacuum equipment.
- Stainless steel pipework and fittings.
- Swagelok or similar compression fittings.
- Manual milling and turning.
- Precision mechanical assembly.
- Scientific, laboratory or specialist engineering equipment.
