Role Overview – Mechanical Engineer
Our client is a forward-thinking business who specialise in developing advanced systems that tackle complex engineering demands in extreme settings, such as elevated pressures, extreme temperatures, severe vibrations, abrasion, and corrosive atmospheres. As they expand into the geothermal market, they're bolstering their Mechanical Engineering group to advance their established product range, initially created for oil & gas operations.
The Mechanical Engineer will be central to the development, evaluation, testing of equipment. This analytical position prioritises computations, confirmation, and test strategy over intricate CAD modelling. You'll team up with a specialised Mechanical Design Engineer for drafting and 3D models, while you focus on technical validation, design assessments, and sign-offs.
Key Responsibilities – Mechanical Engineer
- Spearhead the development, evaluation, and certification of mechanical components for downhole drilling equipment.
- Conduct technical computations to validate designs and confirm structural robustness.
- Establish testing protocols and supervise performance/reliability assessments.
- Examine and authorise technical drawings and related documents.
- Develop and evaluate test rigs, jigs, and trials for design confirmation.
- Partner with modelling specialists on dynamic FEA and CFD analyses, offering guidance and critique.
- Assist production teams and vendors in troubleshooting technical challenges.
- Create comprehensive technical documents, including analysis reports, specs, and trial logs.
- Collaborate across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software, controls) to achieve seamless integrations.
- Manage workload efficiently to ensure timely project delivery.
- Handle other relevant tasks as assigned.
Key Experience & Qualifications – Mechanical Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- At least 6 years in mechanical development and evaluation, focused on downhole drilling.
- In-depth knowledge of materials, protective coatings, and their characteristics.
- Demonstrated skills in design validation using computations and analytical approaches.
- Capability to execute static Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Proficiency in directing and analysing dynamic FEA and CFD outcomes.
- Familiarity with production methods and design-for-manufacturing best practices.
- Strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Competent in Microsoft Office 365 tools.
- Background in oilfield/downhole equipment
- Skilled in 3D CAD tools, preferably PTC Creo (for evaluation, not creation).
- Track record in planning and conducting validation trials for electro-mechanical devices.
