Delphi Diesel Systems is the World leader in fuel injection technologies such as electronic unit injection, rotary and common rail systems. It has 12 manufacturing locations across seven countries with 5 sites in the UK. The Stonehouse site is a major manufacturing centre of common rail diesel injectors and incorporates the UK’s advanced research and innovation centre.
The Problem
In 2012 Delphi Diesel Systems was going through a period of market stagnation along with many OEMs at that time, this meant they needed to deliver increased cost effectiveness from their PSL as part of a rationalisation process of their supply chain. Despite the reduced budgets available for recruiting personnel there were some 25 unfilled vacancies within the Stonehouse site, many of which were critical to the effective functioning of the site.
The Solution
Omega Resource Group, a long-standing supplier to Delphi, proposed a new approach where Omega provided a dedicated technical resourcing team to work alongside the pre-existing onsite industrial recruitment team to directly focus on attracting engineers by: Widening the search for candidates by looking at candidates who are prepared to relocate to the Gloucestershire area. Focusing on areas with higher unemployment but with a strong tradition for engineering such as Yorkshire, Northern Ireland and South Wales. Headhunting engineers from competitors locally and nationally. Delivering a press advertising campaign Using a social media campaigns to target potential candidates. Engage a consultant to work on how the roles are advertised, to network with candidates and protect and promote Delphi as a premium brand and employer of choice. Setting up assessment days to showcase available talent, including competency based interviewing, ability testing, site tours / presentations to maximise the recognition of transferable skills. Omega designed and initiated a targeted advertising and networking campaign in selected areas of Poland and Portugal, and carried out the initial screening and interviewing of applicants using bilingual Polish recruitment consultants.
The Outcome
Omega’s recruitment campaign resulted in 100 applications, of which 72 candidates were given first interviews. Of the 22 candidates who were successful in progressing to final interview stage, 16 were selected and offered employment. By working with Omega Resource Group, Delphi was able to reduce the size of their PSL and bring in tighter control of rates and costs, homogenising and rationalising their supply chain.
