100 Jobs in renewable energy sector as Mabey launches first phase recruitment drive
CHEPSTOW-based Mabey Bridge is seeking 100 new skilled workers at its new £38m wind turbine tower manufacturing factory at Newhouse Farm Distribution Park, Chepstow.
Job adverts are being placed in Gloucestershire and South Wales media for roles ranging from Fabricators and Welders to Quality Control Technicians.
The company expects to see the first employees in place at its new facility by mid- November. Further recruitment will also take place in the New-Year.
The factory is set to be fully operational in February 2011.
Mabey Bridge Managing Director Peter Lloyd said: “We are building this factory specifically to service the needs of the renewable energy industry and are looking to appoint skilled workers from the local area. “As a company best known for its bridge-building expertise we have a 160-year track record in the engineering industry and a 400-strong workforce committed to high quality engineering.
“Once the new factory is up and running, we aim to provide around half the UK’s requirement for wind turbine towers. We are very excited by our new venture and are looking for new employees who share our vision and drive.”
The new factory will use the latest manufacturing techniques including computer controlled cutting and rolling, robotic welding, steel blasting up to the highest quality and an automated painting facility. This 32,140 square metre facility, which has been fully forward-funded by parent company Mabey Holdings, will be capable of fabricating turbine towers up to 5m in diameter and 40m sections.
The company will fabricate around 300 wind turbine towers per annum at Newhouse Farm Distribution Park.
Mabey Bridge has already signed a preferred supplier agreement with REpower UK to supply wind turbine towers for many of its UK developments.
In January 2010, Mabey Bridge bought the site of its new factory at Newhouse Farm Distribution Park in Chepstow – which comprises South Wales’ largest speculative industrial unit along with 18 acres of land – for £13 million. The firm is investing a further £25m in increasing the size of the existing building and purchasing suitable equipment to enable it to fabricate wind turbine towers on the site.
The new site is ideally located for easy transportation across the UK. The factory has direct access to the M48, M4 and is five miles from the M5 along with good access to nearby ports at Newport Dock, Avonmouth, Bristol Dock and Cardiff Dock.
